Idea
With this project, Melegari explores the extraordinary ability of music to be a universal language — the most powerful tool for overcoming boundaries and build bridges between people.
Searching for a Balkan Blues tells the story of Ariana and Jesús, two musicians and scholars who set out from Barcelona on a journey to Bosnia.
Following the traces of Sephardic music, they discover sevdah — the so-called “Balkan blues” — through encounters with musicians, experts, and ordinary people. Melodies born in distant lands recognize each other, blend together, and become one single voice.
The film is a journey into the living memory of the Mediterranean and the Balkans: a dialogue between
cultures meeting through music, merging tradition and creation.
